From the diasporan melting pot of cosmopolitan London, ZUM originated as a stunning fusion inspired by the hot-blooded passion of Argentinian tango from the bordellos of South America and the fire and brilliance of gypsy fiddle music from the encampments of Eastern Europe. Chris came up with the concept after being inspired by hearing the music of Astor Piazzolla and being introduced to gypsy fiddle music through the playing of Roby Lakatos....and ZUM was born!
Delving deep in to their own roots, the bands’ influences have grown to encompass folk traditions from around the world. Celtic, salsa, bluegrass, klezmer, arabic, calypso - all sit comfortably alongside ‘Nuevo Tango’ masterpieces by Astor Piazzolla, music from the golden era of tango, addictive traditional gypsy melodies and dazzling virtuoso fiddling, seamlessly held together by funky bass lines and sophisticated
threads of jazz.
The band has enjoyed sold-out tours and performances at major music festivals throughout the UK and toured to the USA on three occasions, as well as extensive touring in Europe along with live radio and TV broadcasts. They have also given seven sell-out shows at the South Bank in London.
Magical tenderness and haunting, intoxicating harmonies collide with incredible explosions of sound and rhythmic power .... ZUM is an inspiration to listen to and a joy to watch.
ZUM brings you phenomenal fiddling from Adam Summerhayes, sensational jazz soloing from Dave Gordon, awesome bass virtuosity from Jani Pensola, stunning accordion mastery from Eddie Hession and supreme lyricism from cellist Chris Grist.
